Book lessons: The Screwtape Letters

Is there anyone who feels like God has abandoned you?

Maybe you’ve been faithful to God, you’ve been doing the right thing even though everything is getting harder and harder each passing day. You are trusting Him but nothing changes.

“It’s been so long like this”, you think.

“I’ve faced the same battle so many times”, you say.

If you pay attention to your current circumnstances it seems incongruent to keep believing you’ll see the end of all this.

Don’t you get tired? Don’t you consider all that’s going on and think ‘there is no point in trying’?

You don’t want to go another mile. You don’t feel like fighting anymore. You don’t desire to put a step in front of the other. You just feel like quitting.

You’re not the only one that has faced the same kind of despair. C.S. Lewis understands that really well too.

On his book, The Screwtape Letters, we see and old devil giving advices to his nephew Wormwood about how to destroy a human’s faith; among all his suggestions, he says something that you have to see:

The Screwtape Letters

“Be not deceived, Wormwood, our cause is never more in jeopardy than when a human, no longer desiring but still intending to do our Enemy’s will (God’s), looks round upon a universe in which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys”.

Wow.

Look, I get you are kind of hopeless now. But let me tell you, our enemy has no idea what to do with a person that feels that way and keeps obeying God. You become somehow unstoppable.

The enemy’s work in your life is (look at this) pointless if you decide not to quit just because you’re not getting what you want.

You keep going out of faith, out of a stubborn faith that denies to give up on a true God even if it looks like He has abandoned you.

For all of us in that position right at this moment, let’s keep moving forward. Let’s keep believing no matter what we see or what we don’t see. God’s on the move. He’ll show up at some point, but even if He doesn’t, we’ll have our trust in Him.

Make this very clear to your enemy and your circumstances: I’m on God’s side even if I get nothing out of it anymore. I’m His. I don’t need things to go my way: I belong to Him. This is my everlasting choice: I obey Him because He is my God.

Now. The enemy’s cause is in jeopardy.
